ekphrasis exhibit:
Nov. 2, 2018 -
Jan. 24, 2019

Think of Ekphrasis as a meeting of creative minds. Imagine one visual artist and one literary artist, each employing their own artform to respond to the other’s work. Would you welcome a new interpretation of your work?

Ekphrasis comes from ancient Greek and means literally to speak out, but it refers to the long-standing exercise of artists rhetorically describing another’s work: a poet creating verse about a painting, a musician responding to a sculpture, a painter giving perspective to a poem.

Writers and artists from Missouri and Kansas are invited to submit to Ekphrasis, a juried exhibition due to open in November 2018 at The Box Gallery in Downtown Kansas City.

The jury will select 20 artists and 20 writers to participate. Each selected writer will be paired with a selected artist – and they each will create new work inspired by the other’s work. The final exhibition will feature 40 paired works, which will also be featured in a published book on the show.

Call for Entries

Writers and artists living in Missouri and Kansas are eligible to enter one work for this juried show. The deadline for all entries is Saturday, June 30, 2018. Due to space limitations, we can only accept one work per person, so those who are both artists and writers will need to choose to enter either a literary or visual art work. The non-refundable jury fee is $15 and may be paid online through Paypal or via check to Yocto Arts, LLC. All entrants will be notified of the jurors’ decision by July 30, 2018.

By submitting, artists and writers agree to create a second written or visual work that is interpretive of another artist's piece, which will be assigned to them after jury selection.

The submission period for Ekphrasis is now closed. Thank you to all participating artists and writers! We look forward to the exhibit opening in November.

artwork sales and pricing

15% will be added to the price of each submitted artwork as compensation for the partner writer. If an artwork sells, the artist will take 85% of the original price, with 15% commission to Yocto Arts and the additional 15% to the writer. For example, if a work is submitted with a price of $100, the title card will list the price as $115, of which, if sold, $85 will go to the artist, $15 will go the writer, and $15 will go to Yocto Arts. Artists who would prefer not to sell their work may mark work as Private Collection.
